Testimonials

"If I never said thank you before, let me say it now. Even though it took you almost six weeks to get me to go for treatment, you never gave up on me, like I always gave up on myself. A special thanks to Jodi who never stopped believing in me. By the way, I have been in recovery for 7 months now, what a miracle."
Erin B, Minneapolis, Minnesota

"It's been 17 months, six days and four hours since I last purged, but who is counting. It turned out to be much harder to give up my eating disorder than the cocaine. You were right about going to an eating disorder treatment center that was just as skilled in drug addiction as bulimia. Life is Good!"
Brenda T., Chicago Illinois

"We wanted to thank you helping us find treatment for our daughter. She's like a different person. We are so grateful to all of your staff."
Nancy and Gary B. - Baltimore, Maryland

"Donna, if there is ever anything you need from me just let me know. I am still in recovery, 2yrs., and if I didn't listen to you that day, I never would have made it. Thanks!!!!"
Barbara S. - Long Island, New York

Bulimia Information: Behavioral Signs

People who live with bulimia, or eating disorders in general, are usually adept at keeping their disease well-hidden from family members, friends and co-workers. For this reason, someone with bulimia may be able to avoid treatment for some time. The problem with this is that the longer one goes without treatment, the worse the disease, and their health, will get.

People who live with bulimia may exhibit one or a combination of the following behaviors:

  • Eating uncontrollably when emotionally upset
  • Visiting the bathroom frequently after meals
  • Having feelings of guilt or shame after eating
  • Continual dieting
  • Obsessive concerns with their weight
  • Excessive exercising
  • Abusing laxatives or diuretics
  • Eating in secret

If you have a loved one who has been exhibiting one or more of these signs, they may have a problem with bulimia.

Bulimia Information: Physical Signs

Along with the behavioral signs, people with bulimia will also have certain physical conditions that may indicate that they have the eating disorder. These physical traits can include:

  • Scarred knuckles or hands
  • Puffy cheeks
  • Fluctuations in weight
  • Discolored teeth
  • They may smell of vomit or have a strong odor of mouthwash, perfume or other methods of covering up the smell of vomit

Bulimia Information: Risk Factors

Research indicates that there is no single cause for bulimia nervosa, and that one can actually have a number of different factors that play into their development of the disease. In many instances, the eating disorder stems from various social, psychological or biological issues. Some of the risk factors that are known to play a significant role in bulimia cases include:

  • Dieting - Research indicates that adolescent girls who diet are 12 times more likely to develop bulimia than girls of the same age who don't diet.
  • Low Self-Esteem - People who suffer from low self worth or a negative self image are highly prone to developing bulimia. Low self-esteem is usually found in people who have been abused, depressed or continually criticized by family members. They may also live in a dysfunctional home or suffer from failed expectations of perfectionism.
  • Major Life Changes - Stressful situations like the end of a relationship, moving to a new home, starting puberty or a death in the family can be triggers for someone at risk of developing bulimia.
  • Occupational Pressure - Some individuals have occupations that place a tremendous amount of stress on one's appearance. Industries like acting, modeling, and dancing are a breeding ground for people prone to bulimia, as are certain sports like gymnastics, wrestling, swimming and running.
  • Poor Body Image - Today's adolescent girls are under tremendous pressure to look a certain way, and this is emphasized by many popular magazines and films. This results in girls looking at their bodies negatively, which can ultimately cause them to try dangerous weight loss methods.
