Testimonials

"If I never said thank you before, let me say it now. Even though it took you almost six weeks to get me to go for treatment, you never gave up on me, like I always gave up on myself. A special thanks to Jodi who never stopped believing in me. By the way, I have been in recovery for 7 months now, what a miracle."
Erin B, Minneapolis, Minnesota

"It's been 17 months, six days and four hours since I last purged, but who is counting. It turned out to be much harder to give up my eating disorder than the cocaine. You were right about going to an eating disorder treatment center that was just as skilled in drug addiction as bulimia. Life is Good!"
Brenda T., Chicago Illinois

"We wanted to thank you helping us find treatment for our daughter. She's like a different person. We are so grateful to all of your staff."
Nancy and Gary B. - Baltimore, Maryland

"I was so scared to go to treatment, but Belinda never gave up on me. She found me the greatest treatment center. If you could thank her for me I would appreciate it."
Sarah P. - Raleigh, North Carolina

"Donna, if there is ever anything you need from me just let me know. I am still in recovery, 2yrs., and if I didn't listen to you that day, I never would have made it. Thanks!!!!"
Barbara S. - Long Island, New York

"Bobbie at EatingDisorderClinic.org rocks! Just want you to know I took your advice and followed through with treatment. You were right, I needed to be there and yes, it changed my life."
Lisa R. - Union, New Jersey

What is Binge Eating Disorder?

Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder in which the individual compulsively overeats, sometimes thousands of calories in one sitting. During the binge, the person feels powerless to stop eating and is often out of control. After the binge, the person usually feels embarrassment, guilt and shame. Binge eating disorder is similar to bulimia, but purging is usually not involved.

Binge Eating Disorder Signs

  • Hiding or stockpiling food
  • Eating alone or in secret
  • Eating large amounts of food very quickly
  • Inability to stop eating even when full
  • Eating all through the day, not just at scheduled meal times
  • A feeling of tension that only goes away when eating
  • Weight gain

Left untreated, binge eating disorder can cause progressive health complications, including:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Sleep apnea
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Osteoarthritis

Binge eating disorder affects approximately two million people in the United States.

Binge Eating Disorder Treatment - Our Approach

At the Women's Treatment Center for Healthy Living, we take a multifaceted approach to binge eating disorder treatment, attacking both the emotional and physical sides of the disorder.

In our safe, peaceful residential setting, patients participate in a series of therapeutic activities, including:

Individual, group and family therapy - People with binge eating disorder face daily struggles with their emotions. Through eating disorder therapy, patients can learn how to manage stress and the powerful emotional triggers that exacerbate the habitual binging behavior. Therapy also helps patients work through past trauma and co-existing addictions or disorders, and rebuild broken relationships.

Recreation - Patients join in on recreational activities with a focus on getting healthy, reducing stress and having fun.

Art therapy - This type of expressive therapy gives patients creative ways to share their thoughts and feelings.

Diet and nutrition educational sessions - Our nutritionists and dieticians provide patients with an education about food, nourishment and how it affects the body's function. With the proper education, once a patient leaves treatment, they are better prepared to return to daily living and avoid relapsing into poor eating habits.
