What is Anorexia Nervosa?

While anorexia nervosa, commonly called anorexia, is recognized as an eating disorder, it essentially is categorized as a psychiatric disorder.

When an individual develops anorexia, they restrict their intake of food to the point of starvation in an attempt to be perceived as thin. There are four different criteria that are looked for when making a diagnosis for anorexia nervosa:

• A refusal to maintain body weight at or above what is considered normal for one's height and age
• Intense fear of becoming overweight, even if the individual is currently underweight
• Distorted self-image and the lack of weight loss acknowledgement
• The absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles

Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of all mental disorders. Research shows that approximately six percent of all anorexics will die as a result of their disease. That number rises to twenty percent among those who do not seek effective anorexia nervosa treatment.
